How it Works – EMS Email Continuity Outlook® Extension

Outlook continues to work when Exchange is down

EMS Email Continuity provides immediate access to your standby EMS email system during Microsoft® Exchange and Active Directory® outages and maintenance. During outages, users switch from Outlook to a web interface so they can continue to work with their email, contacts and calendars. The Dell MessageOne EMS Outlook Extension can also keep Outlook working — even if your Exchange servers, Active Directory, datacenter or network are no longer functioning.

With the EMS Outlook Extension, when outages occur and EMS is activated, your users are seamlessly switched to EMS without any action on their part. As users work in Outlook, email is automatically redirected to the backup email service making email server and infrastructure outages virtually invisible.

  • Users have continuous access to email, calendars, contacts, tasks and public folders
  • Historical email and stubbed attachments can be searched from Outlook
  • Users can manage safe/block lists and personal quarantines from Outlook

  • Users have continuous access to email, calendars, contacts, tasks and public folders – In addition to seamless email availability, EMS supports all essential Outlook capabilities. Users continue to be able to work normally with their calendars, tasks, contacts and stored mail. Distribution lists and Global Address Lists remain available for address lookup and group communication. Critical shared data is still resident in cached public folders. In short, Outlook services just continue to work during planned or unplanned outages, vastly improving the odds that users will use the system and stay productive.
  • Historical email and stubbed attachments can be searched from Outlook – EMS Enterprise Archive users can also search and retrieve historical email—viewing not just the email in their Exchange or local folders, but all of their archived mail. EMS Enterprise Archive reduces long-term storage needs by as much as 80 percent by replacing attachments exceeding age and size rules with stubs. Without leaving Outlook, users can manage and retrieve stubbed attachments, specifying if the document should be kept locally or remain in the archive.
  • Users can manage safe/block lists and personal quarantines from Outlook – The EMS Outlook Extension allows EMS Email Security customers to manage personal quarantines directly from Outlook. Users can review quarantined mail and modify their safe/block lists with a single right mouse click.

Administrators also win

The Dell MessageOne EMS Outlook Extension is easily deployed globally as an MSI. It can also be deployed for any sub-set of users and does not require user training. In the event that users cannot access their computers during an outage, they can still use the EMS Email Continuity Web or BlackBerry clients to continue sending and receiving mail from any location with Internet access.

When outages are invisible to your users, support demands are reduced and backup system activations can become a risk-free part of standard maintenance procedures. With continuous email availability and critical Outlook functionality, EMS Email Continuity and the EMS Outlook Extension help your employees and administrators stay productive — no matter what may happen to your organization’s internal IT environment.
