How it Works – EMS Email Continuity Wireless Continuity for BlackBerry® Devices

BlackBerry users never lose access to email outages

BlackBerry wireless devices keep executives, sales, and other critical professionals connected to the information and communications they need. Unfortunately, when Microsoft® Exchange goes down, your BlackBerry users lose wireless communications. This immediately places an intense focus on IT; it is like your highest profile users have been issued pagers preset to sound the alert whenever email goes down.

Wireless Continuity for BlackBerry Devices is an EMS Email Continuity option that provides the first continuity system designed specifically for BlackBerry. Whenever Exchange goes down, EMS allows users to continue to send and receive email from their BlackBerry devices, or over the web, without interruption. Users can also access their email inbox, calendar, and contacts as well as historical email through the Dell MessageOne web-based client.

How EMS provides BlackBerry device continuity

The EMS Wireless Extension is a Linux®-based standby email system that is automatically synchronized with your primary Microsoft Exchange email environment. Whenever problems occur in your Exchange or Notes® environment, EMS can quickly be activated over the web or by phone. In less than one minute, the EMS BlackBerry client will be activated on the devices of all affected users, allowing them to continue to send and receive email over their BlackBerry devices from their corporate email address without interruption.

Companies that use Microsoft Exchange and BlackBerry services are essentially running two separate but fully synchronized mail systems. When Exchange or Active Directory® goes down, BlackBerry services stop functioning and users are unable to send or receive email on their BlackBerry devices. EMS Email Continuity for BlackBerry Devices is the first service to break the dependency on Microsoft Exchange, essentially allowing organizations to quickly “failover” email services to BlackBerry when Exchange goes down, leveraging the RIM network as a backup mail system for wireless users during any outage.

The EMS BlackBerry client can be easily globally deployed with BlackBerry Enterprise Server 4.0 or later and does not require any end-user installation, configuration, or activation. IT is fully compliant with RIM security best practices and fully utilizes standard BlackBerry 3DES encryption.

Microsoft Exchange - When an outage occurs – planned or unplanned, widespread or partial – EMS can be quickly activated. In less than a minute, EMS will redirect your Outlook® client, web, and BlackBerry devices from your primary Exchange environment to the EMS Global Datacenter Network, allowing users to continue email operation without interruption. EMS includes all of the key features of the primary email system including contact lists, calendar appointments, distribution lists, and access to historical email.

Lotus Notes - Activation takes less than a minute, enabling employees to have direct access to a fully functional Web-based email system that allows users to send and receive email from their standard corporate email address. EMS includes all of the key features of the primary email system including: the directory, contact lists, calendar appointments, distribution lists, and important historical email. BlackBerry users will be able to send and receive messages using their normal corporate email addresses. In fact, the outside world will have no idea that you are operating on a backup email system.
