Never Lose Email Service Again

Transparently Protect Against Email Server Outages

David Gilbert, Processor

January 12, 2007 – Any business that runs its own email server has had to face the potential for failures that bring down the email delivery system and disrupt user productivity. Often, safeguards that are put into place in an effort to keep the server up are very expensive and also ineffective against certain types of hazards. With the rollout of MessageOne’s EMS Email Continuity Managed Service, however, there is another way. Now users can transition to the backup service transparently, and IT managers have a quick and dependable means of maintaining their email delivery and history. Through the use of custom software and managed data center services, MessageOne is able to provide email continuity to business customers of any size and budget.

A main advantage to the EMS Service is how simple it is to deploy. It can be up and running in less than a day, and fail-over takes place in less than a minute. The job of synchronizing the customer’s email server and user information is done in advance by custom software that runs at the customer premise. When a failover occurs, notifications are automatically sent out to alert necessary personnel. Once the failure has been resolved, a recovery process is initiated that merges messages from the backup to the primary system.

The EMS Service is based on the Linux platform, and because of this, it can offer all the features of a Microsoft Outlook client, for instance, without many of the inherent disadvantages--such as potential corruption of Active Directory structures or vulnerability to Windows-based viruses and malware. It is also independent of the customer’s IT infrastructure and works with Lotus Notes as well as Microsoft Exchange.

Paul J. D’Arcy, vice president of marketing for MessageOne, explains the significance of the product, "This is the first time companies have had a real way to eliminate the risk of email downtime.” He also points out that the EMS service offers a new cost-effective means of filling in the gaps left by typical high-availability methods such as server clusters, replication, and SANs.
